Six farmer groups in Bulacan recently received one unit each of the compact impeller brown rice mill (CIBRM) under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) regional office in Central Luzon.

Health and nutrition are among the entry points or community concerns that the CEST program addresses hence this project is aimed at increasing the consumption of brown rice by expanding its availability to more people in local communities where malnutrition especially among children might be present.

The CIBRM will enable these farmer groups to produce brown rice and sell it at cheaper prices compared to those available in supermarkets.

Dr. Julius Caesar V. Sicat, DOST Region 3 director said that although brown rice is already available commercially, they are usually sold in supermarkets catering to health-conscious individuals when in fact, it should be made available to more people especially those with nutritional deficiencies.

For the uninitiated, brown rice is produced by removing only the hull of the rice grain thus leaving a higher content of nutritionally important fibers, minerals and natural oils thus making it more nutritious than polished white rice,

The other farmer goup beneficiaries were the Samahang Magsasaka ng Malolos; St. Michael Farmers Association of Pandi; BSJ Iisang Layunin Irrigators Association Inc. and Hulo Gitna Macapatan Irrigators Association Inc. of Bulakan; and Samahang Magsasaka ng Calizon of Calumpit.

Engr. Aira Ronalie Santos of the Provincial Science and Technology Office in Bulacan also said that their office is coordinating with the various local nutrition offices in the different municiaplities of Bulacan to encourage them to use the brown rice produced by the six farmer groups in their supplementary feeding programs.
