At the height of the Covid-19 health crisis, people and communities relied on social media to get news and information about the deadly disease. Local government units also made extensive use of information and communication technology to reach out to their constituents and gather information.

During this time, and at any time during an emergency, a stable and reliable internet  connectivity is essential, especially in rural areas.

Ms. Genevieve Adriano, president of the RA Omega Cable TV Corporation believes that  “rural communities deserve quality service over and above mere access to technology and internet service.” That is why they sought assistance from the DOST Provincial Science and Technology Office in Nueva Ecija, through its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) to upgrade their existing service lines from coaxial technology to fiber optic technology.

With the switch to fiber optic technology, the corporation is will minimize their electric consumption, and increase the number of their Digital Cable TV and Internet Service subscribers by 80 percent. More importantly, they would also be contributing to rural development by providing reliable and affordable internet service in rural areas with limited internet services and provide upgraded viewing experience.

A simple signing of memorandum of agreement and turn-over of check representing the assistance sought from SETUP was held recently at the DOST-PSTO in the Science City of Munoz which was witnessed by the Provincial Director Leidi Mel B. Sicat. In her message, PD Sicat said, “This MOA signing is not just for documentation, but the start of our able  partnership. May these technologies improve your services so that you can reach more communities.”
