The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provincial office in Tarlac through its Municipal Innovation through Science and Technology Project (MIST), recently awarded a set of interactive teaching aid to the Sapang National High School (SNHS) in Moncada town.
This set of teaching aid is expected to enhance the teaching learning experience for both learners and teachers. It contains lectures, quizzes, exercises and simulated laboratory experiments which can be viewed through a television screen.
The provision of the teaching aid is very timely as the school principal, Mr. Manuelito Yangco disclosed that the school is posed to offer advanced science, technology and engineering subjects to their junior high school students in the coming school year. “Kami ay nagpapasalamat na kami ay napili na pagkalooban ng project na ito, malaking-malaking tulong po ito sa academic performance ng aming mga learners, he adds.

What would you do if you were the head of a big family and the government had imposed restrictions on the movement of people and of goods?
And what would you do if your family includes 143 hungry mouths to feed?
When the national government imposed a strict Enhanced Community Quarantine in all of Luzon in the first quarter of 2020 due to the spread of SARS-CoV2 virus, the importance of food sufficiency and security was emphasized more than ever. This is especially true for urban areas, where very limited food production activities is the norm. Not surprisingly, small communities which are greatly dependent on external support such as donations and relief activities are the most gravely affected. And even though the government has of late somewhat loosened the quarantine restrictions in the country due to the positive outcome of the government vaccination program, the importance of preparing such communities for similar challenges in the future must be realized.
The regional office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST 3) with able funding support from the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) did just that. Through the Provincial Science and Technology Center in Bulacan, DOST 3 spearheaded the provision of appropriate technologies to the Bahay at Yaman ni San Martin De Porres, Inc. (BYSMPI) in Bustos, Bulacan such that a balanced diet based on the Pinggang Pinoy concept of the DOST Food and Nutrition Research Institute may be provided to the residents of the said orphanage.

Sabutan and rattan weaving is one of the traditional crafts of Aurora. The sabutan plants growing profusely along the coastal portions of the province, and rattan along the mountainous areas has provided business opportunities for some residents of the province.
Barangay San Ildefonso in Casiguran is one of the geographically isolated areas in Aurora where the sabutan plant is abundant. The Agta people in the area, especially the elderly, are skilled weavers, producing mainly “banig” or sleeping mats. They have also tried producing hats and baskets using traditional techniques.
To enhance the quality of their products, the DOST - Provincial Science and Technology Center-Aurora conducted training, on dyeing sabutan strips using different colors, methods of flattening the strips and forming of the base or “gapo.” They were also taught how to make wallets and placemats thus adding to their inventory.
