The participants of the said training were members of the Galintuja Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative. This women’s group is engaged in the production of dragon fruits with annual production of 572MT of harvested fruits from their 52 hectares of land area. The group reportedly experiences losses due to low demand for fresh fruits and oversupply.
To minimize this losses, Dr. Estrella Zabala of PSAU was engaged by DOST 3 to conduct the training on Dragon Fruit Processing to 11 women members of the group who are also members of the indigeneous peoples community in Brgy. From “poor man’s timber” to “green gold of the forest,” thus, has the common bamboo evolved into one important economic resource for communities across the Philippines. The latter description is very appropriate. Popularly known as a material for building, furniture and crafts, not many know that bamboo also has a role in protecting our environment. It can help in soil stabilization, water retention and prevent soil erosion, to name a few.
Recognizing this potential, the Provincial Science and Technology Center – Tarlac (PSTC – Tarlac) in cooperation with the Tarlac Province Bamboo Industry Development Council (TPBIDC) organized a virtual dialogue and consultative meeting with the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) on bamboo technologies.
